EXPECTATIONS

Thank you so much for considering auditioning for Fiddler on the Roof and we hope that you enjoy your experience!

If you are cast and accept your role we expect you, barring some unforeseen event, to honor your commitment and focus your energy on Fiddler on the Roof at Footlite Musicals.

If you are considering auditioning for another show, please let us know at auditions. We hope you will embrace this opportunity and not use it as a holding place and audition for another show during this time period hoping to get a better part.

VIDEO AUDITIONS

If you are unable to attend the live auditions, video auditions for the ensemble only, will be accepted until February 26, 2024. If you are auditioning for a speaking role, you must audition in person. The strength of the show depends upon the interaction of the characters, and it is very difficult to get a feel for that if the creative team cannot see people audition together.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

All ages listed are stage age. Because of the complexity and demands of these characters, most of them will probably be played by actors that are older than the listed age.  The script gives very specific indications of age.

It also goes without saying that everyone involved in this show must sing.

However, do not let the age suggestion deter you from expressing your desire for or auditioning for a specific part.

It is very important that you bring a sense of yourself to these characters.  We are not trying to replicate, in any way, physically, vocally, or otherwise, what has come before us.

TEVYE – one of the most iconic roles in the theater pantheon.  Strong moral character.  Compelling. Commands the stage but not to the detriment of those he shares it with.  Be yourself. Not an imitation of anyone who has done this role before.  An actor who can sing and feels very comfortable with his body.

Age – middle to late middle age

GOLDE – Tevye’s wife.  Strong character.  Runs the home and her family with a sharp tongue and a loving heart.  An actress who can sing

Age – early middle age

Their Daughters

Tzeitel – the eldest daughter who loves Motel, her childhood friend, with all her heart.  Does not want to marry anyone but him.  AGE – not yet 20

Hodel – has her eye on a match with the Rabbi’s son, but falls in love with Perchik, an itinerant teacher and chooses to leave Anatevka to be with him.  AGE – 18ish

Chava – the third of Tevye and Golde’s daughters.  Studious, shy. Falls in love with Fyedka, who is not Jewish.  Renounces her faith to marry him in the Orthodox Church.   AGE – 17ish

Shprintze – overwhelmed by her older sisters but manages to hold her own.

AGE – 13ish

Bielke – the youngest of 5 daughters.  AGE – 10ish

The Suitors

Motel – The Tailor.  Sensitive and nervous.  Sincere and very much in love with Tzeitel.   AGE – 18-22

Perchik – The Student – Outspoken. Brash, Rabble Rouser.  AGE – 18-22

Fyedka – The Gentile – studious, thoughtful, is willing to go against tradition for the woman he loves.   AGE – 18-22

The Village

Mordcha – the innkeeper – master of ceremonies, the entertainer, one of the towns leaders –AGE – mature

The Rabbi – the religious backbone of the community.  Performs the wedding ceremony and has a blessing for everything – even the Tsar – AGE – Mature

Shandel – Motel’s mother – very proud of her son and his journey to become an independent shopkeeper.  AGE – middle aged

The Dream

Grandma Tzeitel – will be heavily made up.  Will most likely be a part of the ensemble, too.  Should feel comfortable coming out of the trap door

Fruma Sarah – Lazar Wolf’s first wife – heavily made-up – must not be afraid of heights will most likely be a part of the ensemble.

The Ensemble – We are looking for various ages, sizes and ethnicities. It’s a very active village filled with different types of people. In search of talented DANCERS to help fill our ensemble!
