CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
When the show was revamped in 2013 as a new Broadway Edition what emerged was a Tony Award-winning show with modern sensibilities and characters who would take charge of their own lives and destinies. And so, they had to change the names …
ELLA (get the change?) 18 – 30 / Opinionated, charismatic, passionate beautiful, funny; she challenges the prince to change the policies of his kingdom, and helps him discover who he truly is; determined to see the good in everyone else …
TOPHER (the prince) 18 – 35 / Misguided and sometimes lost, desperately trying to do something important with his life; charming but NOT a stereotypical ladies man; thoughtful, appealing and innocent with a goofy streak …
MARIE (a fairy godmother type) 25 – 65 / the town’s resident crazy lady and beggar woman who is warm and wise with an ‘otherworldly’ charm …
MADAME (Ella’s stepmother) 35 – 50 / the epitome of vanity and fashion; unapologetically dismissive and sometimes cruel all in an attempt to climb the social ladder …
CHARLOTTE (Ella’s stepsister) 18 – 30 / brash, self-centered, materialistic, bratty (getting the picture?); never passes up an opportunity to be the center of attention …
GABRIELLE (Ella’s other stepsister) 18 – 30 / though raised the same as Charlotte, she is quietly passionate, empathetic, witty; she’s drawn to Ella and a different way of life …
JEAN-MICHEL (important new character) 20 – 40 / feisty, passionate peasant determined to make a change for the starving class; he has a challenged crush on Gabrielle because they are of different social classes; maybe he thinks he’s in Les Miz …
SEBASTIAN (every show has to have one) 30 – 65 / kingdom’s devious and selfish Lord Chancellor; Sebastian (I fixed a misspelling) attempts to rule without regard for the lower class or anyone other than himself; controlling of Prince Topher …
LORD PINKLETON 18 – 35 / Lord Chancellor’s right hand man or woman; think Le Fou and foo on you …
ENSEMBLE all ages / Unlike some, this is a very active and participating group of Knights, Peasants, People of the Court, Servants; if you are familiar with my work, I like to involve everyone and make sure everyone is involved, so don’t run away from this group of people; they are important and will be treated as such …
ABOUT THE SHOW:
The timeless enchantment of a magical fairy tale is reborn with the Rodgers & Hammerstein hallmarks of originality, charm and elegance. Originally presented on television in 1957 starring Julie Andrews, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s CINDERELLA was the most widely viewed program in the history of the medium. Its recreation in 1965 starring Lesley Ann Warren was no less successful in transporting a new generation to the miraculous kingdom of dreams-come-true, and so was a second remake in 1997, which starred Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother. As adapted for the stage, with great warmth and more than a touch of hilarity, the hearts of children and adults alike still soar when the slipper fits.
