Auditions will consist of your prepared song, a brief reading, and a dance audition. Please prepare a verse and a chorus of a song that best shows your vocal range and bring sheet music in the appropriate key for the accompanist. Dress comfortably and be prepared for dancing.

The auditions will be held at Footlite Musicals in the Hedback Theatre – 1847 N. Alabama St., Indianapolis. Rehearsals are expected to begin off-site soon after the audition dates.

Performance Dates: August 12, 13, 18, 19, 20 at 7:30 p.m.; August 14 and 21 at 2:30 p.m.

Please note that the entire cast is required to have received the COVID-19 vaccine and will be required to show proof of vaccination if cast.

Rehearsals will be most weeks Monday through Thursday evenings. There will also be rehearsals Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Auditioners must state upfront all known conflicts through the rehearsal period. THOSE CAST MUST BE PRESENT FOR AND HAVE NO CONFLICTS WITH THE PERFORMANCE DATES.

Description:

THE SPONGEBOB MUSICAL is the musical adaptation of Nickelodeon’s long-running animated children’s sitcom, SpongeBob SquarePants. We find ourselves in the undersea city of Bikini Bottom, inhabited by happy-go-lucky and ever-optimistic yellow sea sponge SpongeBob SquarePants and his equally quirky circle of friends and neighbors. SpongeBob’s pleasant existence is abruptly interrupted when it is discovered that Mt. Humongous, a nearby volcano, will erupt within the next 48 hours and completely obliterate Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob, trying to prove to himself and the world that he is not “just a simple sponge,” resolves to save the day when everybody else has given up all hope.

Though THE SPONGEBOB MUSICAL is incredibly fun and family-friendly, its timeless story of identity, crisis, and community is also a witty allegory that examines and critiques the politics of the modern era, and it does so in such a way that children will appreciate and understand the plot line, while adults can read between the lines and extract even more from the musical’s message. The production features an eclectic score of music, each song having been written by a different musical artist with the purpose of recreating the type of musical hodgepodge exhibited by the original television series.

Character Descriptions:

SpongeBob SquarePants (Male, Lead, Tenor): He is optimistic, innocent, boyish, energetic, and sometimes hyperactive. This actor should have the ability to move well and be an extremely physical actor – unafraid of climbing and being on tall objects. Additionally: Must be naturally funny and have great comedic skills and precision. Strong pop tenor.

Squidward Q. Tentacles (Male, Lead, Tenor, G# belt.): Grumpy, cynical, dry, short-tempered, generally negative but lovable! This Actor must move well and tap-dancing skills are a plus.

Patrick Star (Male, Lead, Tenor): Well-intentioned but lacking common sense or skills; kind and somewhat clueless, an innocent; a big softie, who can also be prone to sudden child-like fits of rage or frustration.

Sheldon Plankton (Male, Lead, Tenor): His personality outweighs his size- slick, scheming, nefarious; has the ability to charm; determined, he will do anything to get ahead in life; very greedy, but his heart is still open enough to rekindle a romance with his wife. This character will need to dance and rap skills a plus.

Karen the Computer (Female, Supporting, Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano): Glamorous, a robotic housewife of Plankton. She’s been there for Plankton’s every scheme and plot and has become jaded – she’s been there and done that. Strong comic actress, as well as singer and mover.

Pearl Krabs (Female, Supporting, Mezzo-Soprano): Mr. Krabs’ bratty teenage daughter. This is a character role with gospel vocal overtones.

Sandy Cheeks (Female, Lead, Mezzo-Soprano, Alto): A brainy and athletic Texan squirrel who came to Bikini Bottom for a research project. She acts as SpongeBob’s most trusted ally on their quest to stop the volcano from erupting, using her vast amount of scientific knowledge and brilliant inventions to aid the mission.

Eugene Krabs (Male, Lead, Baritone): The greedy owner of the Krusty Krab, and employer of SpongeBob and Squidward. While everyone is off panicking about Bikini Bottom’s imminent doom, he decides to strike the iron while it’s hot and puts on a huge “apocalypse sale” at his restaurant, exploiting the fear of his fellow fish to make him even richer.

Electric Skates (Male, Featured, Tenor, Baritone, Bass): Rock and roll band members, the Skates are hard-core, grungy, heavy metals meet World Wrestling. Strong Dancers, very comfortable on skateboards (need to “play” guitar while skating), ability to do skateboard tricks a plus. Also open to rollerblade or inline skating if the actor is an expert, with tricks available. Strong tap skills are a plus.

Ensemble: A variety of character types to play several featured ensemble roles; Students with comedic timing, extremely strong pop/rock or contemporary musical theatre voices and be able to tap and dance hip-hop extremely well.
